Jo Mazzarol started the Blacksmiths Association of Western Australia (BAWA) circa 1971 when he was teaching Design and Technology at Mt Lawley Senior High School.
He advertised in his local paper for those interested in Blacksmithing and the first meeting was held in a Woodwork room at Mt Lawley with about fifteen people attending.
About five of the original team stayed to help form the Association.
Today BAWA has a strong and loyal membership.
Based at the Claremont Showgrounds BAWA works closely with the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia (RASWA) and several other associations.
BAWA presents and demonstrates regularly at libraries, county fairs and of course on our home ground at the Perth Royal Show.
BAWA’s focus is all about keeping the traditional art of Blacksmithing alive in Western Australia and also supports many different associations and groups in need.
