Are you taking new members?

Yes – but there is a waiting list.

Can anyone join?

You need to be an adult (18 years or older). Male and female applicants of all ages are welcome. The BAWA Committee discusses all applications and we will let you know if you are successful.  All new members are subject to a probation period.

What is the procedure for joining BAWA?

1. Meet and greet with the president or Vice President of BAWA (meet and greet days are generally Saturdays )

2. Participate in the introduction to Blacksmithing Course (IBC) – $300, which runs over two consecutive Saturdays.

3. Once a person has successfully completed the IBC they can apply to become a member of BAWA.

Note: Completing the course does not guarantee automatic entry into BAWA.

How much does it cost to be a member?

$110 annual membership and $10 per visit to cover the cost of charcoal and consumables.

When do you meet?

Most Wednesdays, Saturday & Sundays when the RAS grounds are open typically between 10am and 3pm. There’s also a group that meets on Wednesday.

Where do you meet?

The Claremont Showgrounds.

What experience do I need?

Having basic (hand / power) tool skills is helpful but not vital. Common sense and a sense of safety are requisite for working with white hot steel!

What do I wear?

Natural fibre clothing (non-synthetic) is a must. Safety glasses are mandatory. Hearing protection is recommended. Sturdy boots are also required. Metal will melt through sneakers in a flash!
